Bachint Kaur’s Journey Through Words and Literary Triumphs

Bachint Kaur, born on February 8, 1940, in Bharho, Sangrur district, Punjab, is a
celebrated Punjabi fiction writer and poetess. Despite an early marriage and
significant family responsibilities, she pursued her education diligently, earning
degrees up to M.Phil.
She began her prolific literary career in 1972 with a collection of short stories and
has since authored over sixty books across various genres. Her works have been
translated into numerous Indian languages, and she has received wide recognition
and awards for her contributions to Punjabi literature.

Her autobiography, ‘Pagdandian’ (Part-1), was critically acclaimed, especially
after its serialization in ‘Punjab Kesari’ and ‘Naagmani’, making it one of the most
widely read autobiographies among Punjabi readers. It has also been translated
into Hindi, Marathi, Urdu, English, and Yugoslavian. Many of her stories have
been serialized for the television.
Bachint Kaur’s early life was marked by hardship, including living in the
challenging Durga Colony slum in Central Delhi and facing financial difficulties.
She often wrote while sitting on the stones of the hill in the colony. Her struggles
are vividly detailed in her autobiography. Her life improved significantly after
securing a government job at the ‘Pusa’ Institute (ICAR) in New Delhi in 1965
and being allotted a DDA house in Janakpuri in 1970.

After her retirement in 2000, she lived in USA for a short period, undertaking
various jobs and courses. She is currently a permanent resident at Dera Beas,
Punjab. The second part of her autobiography, ‘Pagdandian’ (Part-2), was
published in 2023.
